All About Cavapoos
History, temperament, sizes, grooming, and what to expect when you bring a Cavapoo home — written by a family that raises them in our living room.
A Short History
The Cavapoo is a designer cross between a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and a Poodle. The cross first took off in Australia in the late 1990s, alongside the Labradoodle and Goldendoodle movement. Breeders were looking for a small companion dog with the Cavalier's famously sweet, people-focused temperament paired with the Poodle's intelligence and low-shedding coat.
Today the Cavapoo is one of the most popular hybrid companion dogs in the world. They are often chosen as therapy dogs, emotional-support dogs, and family pets — especially for families who want a small, gentle, low-shedding companion that adapts well to apartment or family living.

Temperament
Cavapoos are people dogs — full stop. They inherit the Cavalier's loving, gentle nature and pair it with the Poodle's smarts and curiosity. They form deep bonds with their families, do beautifully with children, and adapt to almost any home with a little patience.
- Affectionate, gentle, and famously good with children
- Highly social — happy with strangers, other dogs, and cats
- Smart and trainable, with a softer sensitivity than a Goldendoodle
- Velcro tendency — they do not like long stretches of alone time
- Adaptable to apartments, condos, or busy family homes
Sizes & Generations
Cavapoos are bred down using Toy or Mini Poodles, so they stay reliably small. Generation (F1, F1B, multi-gen) influences coat type and how predictably hypoallergenic the litter will be.
Teacup
5–10 lbs
Toy Poodle × smaller Cavalier
Mini
10–15 lbs
Toy Poodle × Cavalier — the classic Cavapoo size
Standard
15–25 lbs
Mini Poodle × Cavalier
F1
Cavalier × Poodle (50/50). Wavy coats, may shed lightly. Strongest hybrid vigor.
F1B
F1 Cavapoo × Poodle (~25% Cavalier / 75% Poodle). Curlier, more reliably low-shedding.
F2
F1 × F1. Coat is harder to predict — anything from straight to curly in the same litter.
Multi-gen
F1B × F1B and later crosses. Predictable coats, sizes, and temperaments.
Grooming
Cavapoos are low-shedding, but their coats — straight, wavy, or curly — all need regular care to stay healthy. The trade-off for not finding hair on your couch is committing to a real grooming routine.
Brushing
3–4 times per week with a slicker brush and metal comb. Wavy and curly coats mat fast around the ears and armpits.
Professional groom
Every 6–8 weeks for a bath, trim, ear cleaning, and nail trim.
Ear care
Cavalier ears + curly hair = moisture traps. Wipe weekly and ask your groomer about plucking.
Coat change
Around 8–12 months the puppy coat transitions to adult coat. Matting risk peaks here — brush daily during this stretch.
Bathing at home
Every 3–4 weeks with a gentle, dog-safe shampoo. Always brush before and after.
Exercise
Cavapoos are happy with about 30–45 minutes of active play, walking, or chasing a ball each day. They love a sunny patch of grass, a walk around the block, and napping on your lap immediately after. Their smaller size makes them an easy travel companion and a great fit for apartment living.
Training
Smart, sensitive, and eager to please. Cavapoos respond best to calm, positive-reinforcement training — they shut down with harsh tones. Start basic obedience as soon as they come home, work on crate confidence early, and prioritize gentle exposure to children, men with hats, vacuums, and car rides before 16 weeks.
Health & Longevity
Hybrid vigor helps Cavapoos avoid some of the issues seen in either parent, but they are not immune. Reputable breeders test parents for the conditions Cavaliers and Poodles are known to carry before any pairing.
Expected lifespan is 12–15 years. Watch for:
- Mitral valve disease (the Cavalier line — DNA-screen parents)
- Syringomyelia (Cavalier line — MRI-tested in elite programs)
- Progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) — DNA-testable
- Luxating patella (small-breed common)
- Ear infections (related to floppy ears + curly coat)
Every Lucky Doodle Pups parent is health-screened and Embark-panel-tested for 250+ heritable conditions before they are bred. We share results with every family.
